Our packing staff have decades of experience in designing and fabricating object packing systems for major cultural institutions. We take great care to create sophisticated but user friendly crate and archival box fitouts, and have a deep understanding of the specific requirements that each object presents.
We keep large stocks of PE foams, Ethafoams, Mylar, tyvek, parsilk, and 3M archival hot glue, so we can complete the job promptly and professionally.
One of the more common approaches used by contractors and preparators when packing framed works is to fabricate Etha slots which rely on a feeble hot glue join between the rail and slot base. This system has several inherent failings; the slots must all have frames in them for structural security, as any empty slot will create a fail point when a shear force is applied (even an air-ride truck impacting a pothole on the road can cause a horizontally configured rail system to fail). Over the years we have been contracted to repair many crate fitouts adopting this system.
In addition to this, the saw cutting process leaves substantial amounts of Etha particulates embedded in the slot assembly, this fine dust is only partially removed through compressed air and vacuum cleaning, much of it consequently migrates through the crate during travel, often impacting the framed objects within. This has caused ongoing treatment issues for conservation departments in cultural institutions, especially where static attraction results from frames glazed with acrylic.
Our unique one-piece custom Etha slot system solves both of these problems, and has been adopted by several major cultural institutions. We can supply full sheets with integrated standard Fini sized slots ready for easy fit to your current crate stock, or we can custom make slots and overall dimensions to your specifications.
